Wellness Tip: Building Routine and Habits Early
New semesters come with a lot of change all at once: new class schedules, new people, and often a completely different daily rhythm than the one you had over the summer. That shift can feel disorienting even when it's exciting, and that is completely normal.
According to Psychology Today, structure supports mental health, and routines help balance freedom with focus. Building a few small habits early in the semester, before the workload piles up, can make it much easier to stay grounded when things get busy. Here are a few ways to start building that structure now:
Get organized early. Use a planner or app to map out classes, assignments, and deadlines for the first few weeks. Visual structure can reduce a lot of early-semester anxiety.
Plan around your energy. Notice when you focus best and try to schedule demanding classes or study blocks around those times, rather than back-to-back with no breathing room.
Start small. You don't need a perfect routine on day one. Pick one or two habits, like a consistent wake-up time or a weekly planning session and build from there.
Protect your sleep. A steady sleep schedule is one of the simplest things you can do to support focus, mood, and energy as the semester ramps up.
Use your campus resources. You don't have to figure it all out alone. Academic coaching, wellness consultations, and other campus supports exist to help you build a routine that actually works for you.
Looking for more support as you settle in? The WRC's YouTube channel has on-demand workshops and resources you can revisit anytime this semester.
If you're finding the transition harder than expected, Temple's Tuttleman Counseling Services is here for you, and free mental health tools like Togetherall and Welltrack Boost are available year-round using your temple.edu email.
From all of us at the WRC: welcome back, Owls! Here's to a strong start and an even stronger semester!
Be Well TU! <3
