October is Domestic Violence Prevention & Awareness Month, a time to talk about relationships, learn who we’d like to be as a partner, and share resources that support safety and connection.
The Wellness Resource Center wants every Owl to know that you are worthy and deserving of relationships that are respectful, joyful, and truly loving.
Wellness Tip: Be Curious & Intentional
This month the WRC will be offering education and events in honor of Domestic Violence Prevention and Awareness Month. While engaging with these programs can foster a sense of connection and hope for the future, they can also activate difficult emotions. When navigating campus this month, take time to notice any emotions and sensations that may come up and allow yourself some time for joyful movement to release any tension.
Communities and organizations across the country connect with neighbors and one another to raise awareness about the signs of abuse and ways to promote prevention early, as well as elevate survivor stories and provide resources.
College students and young adults may be starting relationships for the first time, learning communication styles, boundary-setting, and navigating the continuum of feelings that accompany intimacy. Here are a few invitations for the month (and beyond):
- Notice feelings and the people who evoke them. Our intuition is a powerful messenger that can point us in helpful directions. Pay attention to sensations that draw us away from our comfort zone – are they butterflies or red flags?
- Learn about the dynamics of abuse and unhealthy behaviors. Boundaries and behaviors are unique to each of us, and we can embrace healthier behaviors that promote respect, trust, calm, and our core values.
- Begin by believing. Dating violence can be isolating and survivors often report feelings of shame and loneliness. A seemingly simple, "I believe you and you deserve to feel safe." can go a long way toward someone's healing and sense of empowerment.
- Get involved and share hope. While ending intimate partner violence is complex, it all starts with local change and action. Volunteering at a local shelter, attending advocate training, or sharing an hour to answer hotline calls are meaningful steps toward creating a world free of harm.
Looking Ahead:
November brings chillier temps, shorter days, and cozy moments to embrace gratitude. Stay tuned for events that help us connect with our individual power to help others and create positive change.
